Shining a light on the ever-more prevalent discussion of mental health in today’s day and age, “Drowning” by The Red Clay Strays graciously joined listeners’ rotations on July 2nd, 2024. It followed the Americana soul n’ roots band’s massive success with their viral Billboard Hot 100 single, “Wondering Why,” and precedes the release of their highly anticipated album, Made by These Moments.
Ripe with powerful soul and blues energy along with the gripping vocals of Brandon Coleman, “Drowning” was written in the throes of darker times by the band’s guitarist Drew Nix, who touches on the vulnerable feelings of crippling doubt and just trying to keep up in a rugged, fast-paced world. “The more I fake a smile / The more I’m bound to break / I’ve never felt so alone / In a crowd full of folks / I’m tryin’ just to hide the pain,” cries Coleman in his Chris Stapleton-esque rasp over blues rock-fueled guitar riffs.
Western AF, producers of field recordings for beloved country, Americana, and roots rock artists, recently welcomed The Red Clay Strays for a taped performance of “Drowning” at the band’s home base pub, Callaghan’s Irish Social Club. The band has skyrocketed in notoriety in recent years, even earning their debut late-night television performance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” where they performed another single from the upcoming album, “Wanna Be Loved.”
A third track of the album’s eleven songs made its debut in June, with “Devil in My Ear,” which keeps in line with the mental health focus and honesty-driven lyricism the band delivers so scintillatingly well. Slide guitar and Southern style rock guide the song’s conversation on haunting thoughts, and one’s will to desperately escape them.
Made by These Moments, due for release on July 26th, 2024, will send the group on a national headlining tour, following their current tour across the United States and Europe through November. The album, produced by Grammy award-winner Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton), will be kicked off with two electrifying release shows — July 16th at Los Angeles’s Troubadour and July 31st, at Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl.
The Red Clay Strays will also be featured among acclaimed artists like Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, and Tyler Childers on Twisters: The Album, releasing on July 19th, in accompaniment to the upcoming Twisters film, which is to be released July 17th.
With “Wondering Why” claiming its title as a RIAA Certified Gold Single, national TV performances, the band’s quick charting on numerous acclaimed lists, and so on, it goes without saying that Coleman (lead vocals, guitar), Nix (guitar, vocals, harmonica), Zach Rishel (guitar), Andrew Bishop (bass), and John Hall (drums) aka The Red Clay Strays are a group destined to be a household name.
As Made by These Moments soon takes its spot in the world of modern music, it seems fond memories galore are in store for the band and its fans as they take on each city one emotionally encapsulating show at a time.
