Gracing streaming on July 31st, 2026, “Don’t Underestimate Me” is the latest single to adorn SJ Mortimer’s solo discography, and her message is clear: she isn’t waiting for anyone’s permission.
Playing off the momentum of “Late Bloomer,” another single of hers released the month prior, Mortimer’s solo project includes work with long-time collaborator Sol Philcox-Littlefield, where they recorded at The Nutthouse in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
“Don’t Underestimate Me” embellishes the singer’s solo career with a rollicking anthem of self-assurance and grit.
A clear-as-day declaration of self-confidence as emphatic in its lyricism and delivery as its booming power-pop backing, the single speaks to Mortimer’s steadfast vision for her music. Further, the track speaks to a sense of tenacity cultivated through the Morganway lead singer’s experience as a female musician, denouncing the belittlement she’s faced through a candid flipping of the bird in musical form.
With her work in the industry eclipsing a decade, it’s no surprise Mortimer understands exactly the gender-based discrimination in folk and country circles. In her words, she states, “I’ve spent many years in this industry and, like so many women, I’ve experienced what it feels like to be unfairly criticized or pushed aside.”
Mortimer touts a decorated music career through her role as lead singer for the aforementioned UK Americana band Morganway. Having toured through the United Kingdom, the United States, Europe, and China, the band has earned its prestige as a four-time BCMA Band of the Year award winner and UK Americana Awards nominee.
The band’s popularity has allowed for main stage performances for the likes of Shrewsbury Folk Festival, Country Calling, Fairport’s Cropredy Convention, The Long Road, Towersey Folk Festival, Belladrum, and most recently, Maid of Stone Festival.
