Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears pays homage to tumultuous weather in his hometown of Music City with the new single, “Storm’s Comin’ Tonight.”
“Storm’s Comin’ Tonight” is the third single from the artist’s upcoming LP, Head in the Sand, due out February 7th, 2025. The first, “Roll on Buddy,” is an ode to Thompson’s beloved dog who passed away, and the second offers a more psychedelic ballad emulating the album’s cover art, “Riding In The Van.” Through his single releases, his upcoming Americana roots-rock album establishes a versatile and changing sound—especially in his newest track.
“Storm’s Comin’ Tonight” distinguishes itself among the previous releases by defending just why the Nashville Scene calls Thompson the “guitarist extraordinaire.” Mid-song, he breaks into what he calls a “2 minute long free freakout.” Just before the “freakout” starts, he sings the line, “Storm’s comin’ tonight / I heard it on the radio.” Then it begins: an intermission of chaotic yet intentional guitar riffs that build like inclement weather. His intuitive and organic guitar playing turns the single from a song about storms into a storm itself.
In Middle Tennessee, we are no stranger to the threat of tornadoes and damaging storms. Being on constant alert for the next storm inspired this number from Thompson: “I wanted to write a ripper about storm anxiety,” he shared. “Many of my friends and myself have harrowing stories of enduring those violent storms. Those damn things are scary.” Thompson’s single captures the feeling of taking shelter from a storm, waiting for the changing winds to pass over, and not knowing what waits on the other side.
After Thompson’s guitar “freakout”, he sings the final verse: “Storm’s comin’ tonight / And I’m sitting here waiting.” The song quiets down, and his guitar riffs mellow out and grow calm as the song dissolves. But is this the calm before the storm, or the sign that the storm has passed? That question captures the feeling of threatening weather anxiety.
The Blue Room in Nashville will host Thompson’s album release show on February 6th, the day before it hits digital shelves. And on the day of release, he will appear at Grimey’s for an in-store performance. After its release, he will host a listening party at The Green Ray on February 8th from 5 PM to 7 PM.
