New York-based indie pop rockers Rebel Kicks began building their way at a very young age for what would later become the two brothers’ soaring expedition into the world of music.
While most children passed time by playing outside or watching television, Anthony and Steven Babino grew up singing harmonies alongside their father, a professional jazz musician. Needless to say, the rock-leaning indie-pop pair were raised with the pulse of a song inside them.
The brothers have come a long way since their initial entrance into music. Since forming in 2018, Rebel Kicks released their debut album, A Portrait of Man: Part 1 and a collection of hit tracks featured on MTV and Showtime. Now, the band of brothers continue to develop their unique blend of rock, pop, electronica and R&B in their brand new EP, somewhere.in.between.
A glittery pop-rock soundscape with deeply felt grooves and infectious melodies, somewhere.in.between highlights the band’s ability to create a little something for just about anyone.
Transporting listeners to a sweet, faraway escape, the EP kicks off with punchy dance single, “The Girl In Barcelona.” The exciting introductory track offers a breezy, coastal sonic sensation, topped off with sharp guitar hooks and a driving beat. The track embodies freedom, youth, and adventure, and has a very real possibility of living rent free in your head.
Following the lively energy of the EP’s opening, the second track, “Past Life,” offers a catchy account of “the mysteries of human connections and soulmates,” as the band says. The track’s evocative, synthy ambience reveals the duo’s versatility and dynamic range.
“Feel Good,” a laid back and dreamy jam, is another standout track on the EP, highlighted by its smooth bass line, thoughtful instrumentation and buttery, harmonic vocals. Lyrically simple and straightforward, it’s the playful and warm sonic landscape that allows the message of the song to shine through and resonate.
Rebel Kicks’ journey has been a mix of musical exploration and personal growth. “We’ve always been about pushing the boundaries of our sound, drawing from a rich tapestry of genres,” says Anthony. Steven adds, “Our music is a reflection of our journey, an amalgamation of our diverse influences from jazz to classic rock to R&B.”
The indie pop brothers will be showcasing the new songs from somewhere.in.between at spring shows at Cafe 939 in Boston and Mercury Lounge in NYC.
