Inspired by the greats of today and yesterday, Devin BX’s newest single, “Speechless,” encapsulates the energy and raw feeling of a modern-day soul artist.
The tender new single – which hit streaming services this past Friday August 19th – taps into Devin BX’s singer-songwriter side, and is a more emotional track with an intimate feel. His smooth and buttery vocals grace the acoustic arrangement, digging up the singer’s gospel roots and taking the listener on a heartfelt sonic journey.
“Speechless” is a newer sound for Devin BX, as his previously released singles, such as “Deeper,” are more uptempo and instrument heavy. The production is ethereal and clean, allowing the feeling to pour out of the lyrics. The single tells a pleading story of helplessness in life and love, with tasteful harmonies that highlight the lines of the chorus that dig deep. The spoken piece at the end of the song is stylistically reminiscent of the songs on SZA’s Ctrl, giving another layer of meaning to the song.
Growing up in the Bronx, Devin BX was introduced to music at an early age. His father was a gospel music executive, and later on, the New York native joined the Grammy-nominated group JJ Hairston & Youthful Praise.
The soulful singer attended Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) for Music Business and Recording Industry Studies, establishing a firm foundation for the career he dreamed of for himself. After collaborating with fellow students and participating in highly selective projects, he was inspired to become a recording artist himself. His music is genre-fluid, ranging from funk to folk to soul to singer-songwriter.
The single precedes the release of Longer Days, Devin BX’s first EP and memory book of his deepest emotions over the past few years. The August 19th release date is also of significance, as it coincides with the singer-songwriter’s birthday.
Devin BX continues his expansive collaborations with artists in both Nashville and the Bronx, linking his past and present-day homes with music. We look forward to seeing what else he’ll have in store for us on his upcoming album.
