Ohio-born songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and podcaster extraordinaire Davey Squires does a little bit of everything.
Whether he’s playing the harmonica or piano, or interviewing and collaborating with various artists, his passions and pursuits create a space for him to not only connect with others through conversation, but also through the music he himself creates.
Although his music has reached many thousands through the wonders of streaming, Squires had beginnings characteristic of many full-time musicians, which started with finding a knack for the drums through concert and marching band at his high school. He later went on to pursue a degree in Music Technology at Kent State, and started releasing his own music in 2019 with “The Star.” Since then, he’s released two full length albums, Radio Silence (2023) and California 99 (2022), and even went on a national tour in support of the latter album.
Squires’ latest single, “Pie In The Sky,” demonstrates his unique ability to blend genres like jazz, soul, and pop-rock among other offshoot genres. And much like his recent discography, he fuses resonating piano chords with a musical theater flair, utilizes electronic drums, and has an ear for adding additional bells and whistles to enhance his songs.
The single dabbles with the melodica, a piano that includes a mouthpiece which is used to create a whistle-like tone, but Squires is also known to pick up and experiment with a multitude of instruments including guitar, bass, saxophone, and the trumpet among other things. Basically, anything that makes a sound.
“Pie in the Sky” displays his vivid imagery as a lyricist as well, with lyrics like, “So here I am at the coast of the water / Dreaming of ways to get to the other side / Don’t believe I can do it in this lifetime / I back away and brush the dirt off my pride.” Squires offers an honest reflection, and conveys struggle and a desire for something new, or someone from his past to come back. It can be a challenge to communicate emotional themes with a soulful, jazzy ballad, but Squires does just that.
Not only does Squires prove his dedication and musicianship through his songs, but also his ability to manifest emotions into words in a vulnerable way, as listeners will come to hear with “Pie in The Sky.”
