Sincerity and honesty is the mission of singer-songwriter Charlotte Morris, as she strives to make music that is raw, emotional, and candid. And with her new single, “Villain,” — which hit streaming services today, October 4th, 2024 — she does just that.
On the deviously brooding track that is “Villain,” Morris calls out an ex who just can’t let go — despite their insistence that they’re over her — and proudly moves on.
She claims her spot living rent free in her ex’s mind, finding pleasure in the fact that this former partner hasn’t moved on. “I am the noise you hear at night / I am the voices in your head / I’m the woman haunting your bed,” she sings with sinister delight. It carries a similar sonic energy to Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats.”
This particular ex tries to paint a different picture to their friends, as she sings, “You can spin it out to be some battle that you won / Laugh with your friends about the lies you say I told.” As if this antagonist is trying to convince themselves they’re over her, in spite of what they say and do, the memory of her still haunts them like a bad tattoo.
With a contemporary country pop-rock sound, “Villain” features powerful vocals from Morris along with a wailing and bluesy electric guitar. The track is loud, confident, and defiant as she delivers a feisty performance.
Morris discovered her passion for music at a young age growing up outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She began violin lessons at the age of four, and taught herself many instruments, including the guitar, banjo, piano, bass, and mandolin. She’s been writing and performing her own songs from the age of 12, and she released her first single, “Stay Strong,” in 2011.
In 2018, Morris joined the Lonesome Traveler concert tour, celebrating the history of folk artists from Woody Guthrie to Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.
Morris is currently on the tail end of her Wild Child tour following the release of her 2023 album of the same name.
