Scotland-born, West-Virginia-based, internationally respected – these are the elements that make acoustic guitar phenom and singer-songwriter Ali Tod one of a kind.
The founder of Edinburgh Guitar Night, a concert series begun in her native city highlighting world-class guitarists, has made a name for herself in the acoustic world. Known for her percussive fingerstyle skill, experimental loop-pedal practice, and thrilling live performances, Tod has shared the stage with the likes of Gabriela Quintero, Daniel Ho, and Brandi Carlile since her debut EP in 2021.
Tod’s newest album, a self-titled soul n’ roots record released on October 23rd, emphasizes the evocative songwriting and inventive compositions that have entertained audiences worldwide.
The first single released in September, “Down,” sets the tone for most of the album with sparse production and several tonal shifts that highlight Tod’s versatility on guitar. Her growling vocal discusses pride and the need to shelter struggle from those who do not deserve to witness it. The instrumental break in the back half of the song, a prominent hallmark on the record, builds tension well through the inclusion of an accelerating shaker and bass.
“Day in June” is the third track, introduced as a single on October 16th, and it marries a wistful yearning for summer memories with a danceable groove. The premise and lyricism is simple, lamenting “that day in sunny June / but it came too soon / for me and you,” but functions to ground a rich musical landscape. Another interlude before the final chorus features an addictive descending riff that bursts into an explosive delivery by Tod.
Previously included on her 2025 live album Live At The 8×10, the song “Do or Die” makes another appearance here, as well. This folk-forward narrative travels through the days of several different characters, including a shepherd and a hunter, and explores the force that guides us through the unknown to do what we must to survive. Simply put in the chorus: “we are lighting for our lives / no one gets a second try / do what you have to do / it’s do or die.” The fuller arrangement allows Tod’s raw vocal to shine against a progression that refuses to resolve until the last possible moment, building the tension.
“Already Know” closes out the record, a rolling fingerstyle melody enhanced by sweet backing harmonies and the eventual addition of an ambient electric guitar section. It champions the sentiment that everything will work out in its own way with perseverance and trust. Like a breath of fresh air, the song cheekily withholds the final return to the tonic, as if encouraging the listener to take the first step towards destiny.
Tod’s debut album is a refined triumph for a mature musician pushing the bounds of an already extensive skillset, infused with wonder and soul.
In the aftermath of the European MusiSHEan Guitar Tour which she took part in throughout September, Tod has lined up shows in the states along with her album release show slated for tomorrow, October 28th, at The Bitter End in New York City with Alex Skolnick. She was also invited to perform at Brandi Carlile’s Girls Just Wanna Weekend this coming January in Mexico.
