The infectious pull of America’s luminous big cities and coastal towns has forever drawn small town talent out of the woodwork and onto their grand stages.
Born and raised in the Pennsylvania countryside, Mark O’Donnell — singer, songwriter, and face of The Ram — is shining his light on the beauty of the mundane one performance at a time with his latest EP, Everything, released June 14th, 2024.
Personalizing the listening experience by releasing different versions of the same song, Everything hosts its title track accompanied by extended and instrumental variations. The now California-based musician and visual artist released an artistically serene music video to complement the extended track, featuring a beach-side performance of his, seaside views, and shots of O’Donnell’s current favorite pastime – surfing.
An ode to the gift of humankind’s growth-propelling ability to find beauty in anything, “Everything – Extended” rolls in with cool snare and smooth iron guitar over bubbly ariose synth. Mike Pritchard’s 70s organ-style solo, featured near the end of the song, blew O’Donnell into the writing room after their recording session, with inspiration enough to write the whole song’s worth of lyrics. “Everything transforms into something beautiful,” he admits, charging the song with hopeful and lulling tones.
O’Donnell’s long history of software production and sound engineering have offered him some insight into the industry, and “Everything” delivers the dynamic and nuances typically fit for radio play. The track kicks off with more bopping, grooving keys, in comparison to the more ambient, experimental synth tonality found in the extended version. A perfect groove for a campfire on the beach, “Everything” still faultlessly delivers its message while exemplifying The Ram’s ability to hone in on industry appeals.
Given Pritchard’s performance and its effect on O’Donnell, “Everything – Instrumental” presents the euphonic track that inspired the album’s lyricism, yet absent of utterance. Somehow the words and feelings that tie these songs up like a neat bow are still conveyed through the timbre of the instruments, and O’Donnell’s inspiration is clearly not misplaced.
The Ram brings their sound to fruition with the talent of local musicians joining O’Donnell in supporting tasteful Southern Californian rock riffs with drums, keyboard, and bass guitar. Following a trip back to his roots near sunny Philadelphia, he returned to his home in Carlsbad, California, finding the purest of inspiration from the ocean and feelings of family.
Cambridge, New York will play host to The Ram for their next performance on July 7th, 2024 at Argyle Brewing Company, where O’Donnell’s brother Tommy will join The Ram as the band pays tribute to his new release and former home base near the Battenkill river. Though The Ram is planning to sit back for a bit and enjoy his inspirations, O’Donnell can be found talking about all things music, band life, and the industry on his Substack, The Ram: Saltwater and Music.
And surely The Ram will return to charging into their musical ideas head first before we know it.
