Released on December 6th, Davey Squires’ new single “COVID Christmas” sheds a jazzy, soulful, and humorous light on what inevitably will be one of the strangest Christmases we’ll see in our lifetime, to say the least.
With fellow Ohio musician Master Puff dropping bars on the bridge, he tells of how some of us won’t be affected or depressed because of the virus, but will choose to celebrate the holidays instead. It’s a funny and lighthearted tune to capture the finality of 2020, and how families may be spending the holidays (apart). The jazz-tinged, soulful tune sounds like a classic holiday song at first what with the jingle bells, soon to be mixed with grooving keyboard and amusing lyrics. There’s a definite humorous novelty to it that may just make you feel a little better about the whole situation.
Originating from Akron, Ohio, Squires has been touring the country as a pianist, drummer, and singer/songwriter since 2018. As a solo act, he also produces all of his music. Playing a mix of jazz, blues, rock, and classical music, he has toured from New York to Colorado. Gaining the nickname “Davey Velvet” from pairing his smooth vocals with his rhythmic piano, his funky sound is light and airy and can’t help but be contagious. His latest release in July, Revised Horizons, is an EP containing a six-song jazzy arrangement, while also satisfying rock cravings in the single, “Blue Spruce”.
As a hip hop artist from Massillon, Ohio, Squires’ fellow creator, Master Puff, has racked up a total of about 100k streams, which is nothing to sneeze at. He is also the lead vocalist for the duo, Falcon Fighter Gigatrons. His upbeat composure and smile will lift the atmosphere and get anyone grooving to his well-produced beats. Not to mention his witty wordplay and skillful delivery attract crowds wherever he goes.
2020 has been a wild journey, so if you’re looking for something to lighten your view of looking back on the year, then check out “COVID Christmas,” out on all streaming platforms.
