Amidst the chaotic uncertainty that grips our everyday lives both personally and professionally, we could all use a reminder to take it easy on ourselves — a message that rings loud and clear in Scott Clay’s latest single, “The Painter.”
Released this past Friday April 5th, the tender new track is yet another teaser for the songwriter’s upcoming sixth studio album, Jade, slated for a May 4th release.
A storyteller at heart, Clay’s latest album is a celebration of his musical expeditions so far, and his roots as a songwriter. The collection of eleven tracks is experimentally diverse in its composition, from groovy 60s pop inspired riffs to modern folk ballads and much in between.
Though flanked by a host of instrumental accompaniment, the Nashville-based songwriter’s acoustic guitar takes center stage in “The Painter,” giving it a softer core and gentler essence. A nod to his multifaceted creativity, the song chronicles connections between art and life and the pain of loving someone enough to make a difficult choice. Full of a raw feeling that penetrates the soul, his vocals are chilling and strong, delivering an echoing chorus that is hauntingly beautiful ’til the final note.
Accompanying the single is an upcoming music video (set to drop April 19th) featuring Clay and his acoustic guitar in an empty chapel. A gravestone marks the life of someone long gone, a hint at the deeper meaning behind this track and its commentary on the link between art and human experience.
Clay’s affinity for capturing the natural world lends itself to his creative prowess, capturing the Americana spirit in a rousing blend of folk styles. The isolation of the pandemic found him traveling to national parks, armed with his video camera. Reflecting on the experience, he describes this time as one of exploration, both of nature and his own creative side.
“The Painter” follows his February single, “One For The Road,” which will also be featured on his upcoming album.
Clay is currently on tour in the UK for much of April.
