Greensky Bluegrass Deliver ‘Stress Dreams’ B-Side Gem In Latest Video Single ‘Get Out’

Bluegrass has been seen a continuous evolution as a genre since its advent in Appalachia many decades ago.

Today, it comes in the progressive form of notable heavy hitters like Greensky Bluegrass, a quintet from Kalamazoo, Michigan. The band’s genesis was in the Y2K-era, and they’ve since sold out venues like Red Rocks, topped bluegrass charts, and garnered a reputation as some of the best in the business today.

Since Greensky Bluegrass’s humble beginnings, they’ve embraced the traditional elements of bluegrass while leaving plenty of room for experimentation and creativity in their sound. This is especially evident on their newest release, “Get Out,” a B-side track to their latest album, Stress Dreams, which came out in January 2022 via Thirty Tigers.

In “Get Out,” the group details the frustration of recognizing your own negative behavior yet still struggling to correct it. The warm simplicity of the song paired with its artfully honest, relatable lyricism brings the audience to understand the deep challenges of self-improvement and internal reflection, even when you’re willing to change for the better.

Upon the song’s release on June 9th, the band put out a music video shot by Dylan Langille in Reykjavik, Iceland. The video displays the band performing “Get Out” in the unique Harpa Concert Hall, focusing on lead singer and mandolinist Paul Hoffman.

As the song progresses, the camera shifts to each member of the group to feature them individually—Anders Beck on dobro, Michael Arlen Bont on banjo, Dave Bruzza on guitar, and Mike Devol on upright bass—and the video culminates into a beautiful shot of the geometric glass panels of the building’s interior.

“‘Get Out’ is anchored in internal reflection but also includes commentary on our society’s struggle to better itself,” says Hoffman. “Recognizing patterns in our behavior doesn’t always make them easy to correct.”

The no-frills nature of the video perfectly reflects the quiet relatability and realness of the song; it takes a lot to recognize that we aren’t without faults, but it takes some serious fortitude to choose to grow and change.

As the known road warriors they are, Greensky Bluegrass kicked off their summer tour on May 27th, and will be joined by a who’s who throughout with artists like Amanda Shires, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, The Wood Brothers, Sierra Ferrell, and more.
