23-year-old Tennessee native Emily McGill was born to be a country artist.
Daughter of the late Chuck McGill, a local legend in the West TN music scene, the young songwriter has been engulfed in music her whole life. She grew up singing and playing in her family band with her mom Paula and sister Katie, and worked in her father’s music store, The Bandstand.
And on November 18th, McGill released her debut single, “Write You Out of My Memory,” which is available on all streaming platforms.
With her soulful debut track, “Write You Out of My Memory,” McGill echos her love of writing by using it as a form of healing. The song draws influence from country sounds, but is filled with heartfelt soul, with inspirations ranging from John Mayer to Kacey Musgraves.
The melodies flow through her stellar vocals, and guides the listener through McGill’s vulnerable story. The electric guitars add to the soulful power ballad energy that the song projects. She is what some would call “a songwriter’s songwriter,” as she is able to acutely draw on personal experiences and convey universal meaning to those listening.
When speaking more on her songwriting process McGill said, “I pull inspiration from pretty much my everyday life, things that I go through. Also I take inspiration from things other people go through, and try to put it into a song the best that I can.”
In 2020, the singer signed a publishing deal with Eddie and Justy Productions, which is pioneered by seasoned Nashville music veterans Eddie Gore And Justyna Kelley, who also co-wrote on the song. The single was released via new label, Sneaky Animals Music, which is also part of Gore & Kelley’s pursuits, along with the legendary Steve Cropper. The crew operates out of historic RCA Studio C.
“We just fell in love with her voice,” says Kelley who spoke glowingly about McGill.
She has worked and written with noteworthy artists such as Bud Lee, Irene Kelley, Steve Mandile, Jonathan Singleton, and others.
Expect much more from McGill, as her star is just starting to rise. For now, “Write You Out of My Memory” is a damn good debut from the young artist.
