Embodying the essence of 90s alternative jangle rock on their newest track “Airplane” – which features Ryan Miller of Guster – indie pop rockers NEWSKI deliver unapologetic nostalgia, teasing a mix of musical influences and friends that are featured on the group’s upcoming aptly titled album, Friend Rock.
“Airplane” encapsulates the warm and fuzzy feelings associated with the beloved final decade of the 20th century, as the band sends the listener back to Friday night rush hour at Blockbuster, a time when music videos still ruled MTV, and when your only responsibility was to take care of your Tamagotchi.
Wisconsin’s rising lo-fi geek rockers take the listener on a delightful journey of the past, with a melodic groove that’s hard not to get down to. “Airplane” has all the mellow mid-tempo appeal of a 90s revival matched with head honcho Brett Newski’s syrupy vocals and frank delivery.
NEWSKI has put together an All-Star roster of 90s musicians on their upcoming album to revive the spirit of the decade in their own unique way. Each track houses a special guest feature: Matthew Caws (Nada Surf), Brian Vander Ark (The Verve Pipe), Ryan Miller (Guster), and overseas acts like H Burns (France), The Secret Beach (Canada) and The Shabs (South Africa) along with others.
The band itself features Steve “Mr Bicep” Vorass on drums, Sean “Tubs” Anderson on the four-string and Brett Newski on guitars and vocals.
Some of the connections on Friend Rock were made during NEWSKI’s podcast “Dirt from the Road,” where guest musicians would have a laugh about their worst moments on the road. Brett Newski says, “We are nothing without our friends… most of my friends I started with in music have since retired, which makes me feel like the world has turned and left me here. Collaborating with fellow ‘musician lifers’ on this album made me feel less lonely and insane.”
Social science research shows community and friendship are consistent common denominators in the happiest countries in the world, and it’s clearly something artists like NEWSKI takes to heart. Belonging to the right tribe is a catalyst to health and longevity, and Friend Rock is an ode to the power of community. It will hit streaming services and be released on April 7th, 2023 via Nomad Union records.
NEWSKI will hit American, European, and South African highways for a 100 date tour behind the new LP.
