Refusing to be labeled or “ized,” stereotype-eluding singer-songwriter Matthew Morgan is unafraid to tell the world what he thinks, as any artist should.
The progressive songsmith just released his politically-inspired new single, “Two-Sided Town,” a poetic yet honest commentary about the increasing need for unity in a divided society.
Propelled by the belief that country music is not “one size fits all,” Morgan’s take on alternative folk melded with country/Americana music is all-inclusive. His reflective and powerful new single is just one piece of the puzzle. As an artist, he strives to produce work that promotes a deeper message, often tackling prevalent social justice issues.
Starting off with an ambient, atmospheric synth, the song’s moody energy soon settles in. The instrumentation remains mellow as Morgan’s rich vocals take center stage, as the song’s message and chorus rings clear: “’Cause oh your mouth is frightening / When the words come out / Your lies and hate fall down like rain / In this two-sided town.” The lyrics center on the “lies and hate” of the media, which have forced our culture to take sides and pit against one another. As the song progresses, it builds and swells with lush instrumentation and anthemic vocals.
About the current state of our country — particularly in an election year — Morgan touts the “big disconnect and inability to communicate effectively within the U.S.” He says, “I think that a lot of people are shocked by how separated we are as a society and culture right now and I think a lot of us are wondering how much of this divide is rooted in truth and how much of it is perpetuated by the constant stream of media.”
Alongside the release is a stirring lyric video, offering a visual representation of the track. The words appear on an old television screen accompanied by scenes from the 1950 MGM film, Side Street.
Morgan’s most recent album, Timepiece (2023), is his first full release since 2015. Since then, his storytelling abilities and artistic motivations have matured. “Two-Sided Town” marks a new venture for the artist, whose previous work has been primarily indie-folk in nature. This new single explores a unique realm of ambient Americana and synth folk-pop, expressing a sound not often heard. It was produced by Columbus, Ohio-based engineer Brian Skeel.
In a world fraught with deception, Morgan’s artistic honesty and unflinching individualism brings a refreshing perspective to the modern music scene.
