Holy Shit: Guided By Voices Set To Release 41st Album ‘Universe Room’

It’s an accomplishment to put out one album. It’s an accomplishment to put out two albums. Hell, you’re doing great if you put out three albums.

41 albums. That’s how many that indie rockers Guided By Voices will have put out come February 7th, 2025, when they release their 17-track record, Universe Room.

Led by principle songwriter Robert Pollard, the band — which naturally has seen its fair share of members come and go since 1983 — has developed a solid cult following since their humble Dayton, Ohio roots. Over the years, songs like “Game of Pricks,” “I Am a Scientist,” and “Hold On Hope” among others seem to be some of their most recognized.

Flash-forward to today, and they’ve been peeling off their latest singles ahead of the upcoming record.

Kicking the campaign off was the lead single “Fly Religion” in November of last year, which was followed by “The Great Man” in December, with “Dawn Believes” greeting listeners in the first 72 hours of 2025. The latter takes things in a bit of different sonic direction. Trading the distorted guitars and heavier drums of the previous single for a gentler, jangly electric guitar and an uptempo, hurrying rhythm, “Dawn Believes” lends an anticipatory momentum to the upcoming discography.

The differences in style between the tracks is an intentional one, according to Pollard. “I wanted to create, hopefully, an experience, kind of a wild ride, where the listener would want to hear it multiple times in order to grasp all the sections and fields of sound to discover something new with each listen.”

Opening with a strummed electric guitar, it’s soon accompanied by a bittersweet yet hopeful melody. As the song builds and more layers are added, the tone grows increasingly brighter, reflecting the rising sun at dawn.

In the chorus, hope for the coming dawn is found within oneself: “It’s your number one / When you come to your senses,” Pollard sings. The “dawn” seems to be the belief of a brighter future; a belief that can be radiated throughout the night for those who need that hope.

And just last Friday January 24th, they released their fourth and final single, “Elfin Flower With Knees.”

The upcoming album fits 17 diverse and expansive tracks into a runtime of less than 40 minutes, taking the listener on a journey of unique musical ideas, experimental choruses, and daring shifts between lo-fi and hi-fi production, under the watchful eye of producer Travis Harrison.

“For the rest of the songs, we used a lot of different approaches to the recording of both the instruments and the vocals,” adds Pollard, which is evident on tracks like “Clearly Aware,” where the band was completely recorded on just one mic.

Universe Room embodies a realm of new horizons for Guided By Voices, who continue to redefine and expand as they blast off to unpredictable worlds. Here’s to 41 more albums, guys.
