Nashville Americana southern rockers Highway Natives have recently released the second single from their upcoming album, and it will bring you straight back to your deepest heartbreak.
“Wait til it Breaks,” released May 17th, is yet another delightful appetizer from Highway Natives’ upcoming album, Hello Sunrise, set to release on August 2nd, 2024. The gang shipped south to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to record the album at the iconic FAME Studios where they conjured the magic of the many legends who crossed the threshold there before them.
While the band’s lead single for the album, “Change in My Life,” has a much more lively and upbeat energy, “Wait ‘Til It Breaks” displays their more tender side, showcasing instrumental and emotional range with its piano-ballad direction.
“Wait ‘Til It Breaks” reflects on the feeling of trying to push through troubles in a relationship knowing it will all crumble in the end. It portrays a kind of hopelessness in its chorus, mourning a romance before it’s over with lines like, “So I’ll wait til it breaks / Til it’s too late.” This is contrasted by feelings of self-blame in the verses through lines like, “Something ain’t right / My stubborn pride / Put up a fight pretty good.”
The single begins with a slow piano progression, which then expands with a flowing violin harmony, and finally the addition of balladic vocals, all building up to an epic musical intermission, followed by an explosive vocal reentry with the line, “She tells me she’s hurtin’/ And I ain’t been listenin’ / The heart has so much it can take,” creating an intense emotional climax.
The impressive range of emotional dynamics allows the vocals and guitar of Brandon Moore to soar, along with the rest of the talented five-piece ensemble. With two very different singles now in their holster, the stage is getting set for Hello Sunrise.
