Known for her captivating narratives and infectious melodies, indie singer-songwriter Happie Hoffman aka HAPPIE has a way of getting her listeners in their feels.
In preparation for Father’s Day, HAPPIE has released her latest single, “Shooting Star,” which offers a deeply tender and beautiful message to the man who raised her on this planet.
The release of “Shooting Star” is a tribute to the close knit relationship with her father, who has had a lasting impact on both her life and her work creatively. The sweet and delicate acoustic ballad expresses how most moments are fleeting, much like a shooting star, and why it’s important to cherish those times and relationships that we know won’t last forever.
“Shooting Star” also acts as an introduction to her new EP, slated for release this summer. The new collection of songs showcase HAPPIE’s growth and reinvention, featuring tracks that explore the complex facets of love, like that from the tender father-daughter perspective in the latest single, to the depths of romantic love and the nuances of emotional closeness in songs like “Close.”
“Each project represents a chapter of my life, and ‘Shooting Star’ is perhaps the most tender yet,” HAPPIE shares. “It embodies the lessons of love and wisdom imparted by my father, who always reminds me before a performance to ‘show them your heart.’ This track and the entire EP are my way of doing just that, sharing my heart through music.”
For HAPPIE, music is something that just makes sense. She recalls writing songs for friends as gifts from a young age, and always being able to pick out what would come next sonically in the pieces she listened to. Although raised in the musical town of Memphis, TN, her journey with song has taken her all over the country and globe.
As a college student at Indiana University, she started a cover band, and later went on to travel as a part of the duo Eric and Happie. The pair sang a collection of Jewish folk and indie folk songs, hitting important cultural spots close to their heritage like Auschwitz, Argentina, Russia, and the UN.
After six years of touring, HAPPIE got to work on her solo catalog, which consisted of the release of her breakthrough EP, Heartbreak Season, in 2022, along with several singles in 2023. Creating a sound that maintains a movable groove without taking away from her light vocals is a challenge, but is done beautifully through her most recent releases, as she continues to tell her honest truth in the words she conveys sonically.
