A mature showcase of Ethan Senger’s talents as both musician and songwriter, his sophomore EP Standing Still effectively explores fusions between pop, indie rock, and singer-songwriter.
Raised in Atlanta, Senger is a third generation guitarist, learning to play and perform when he was just seven years old. Since his late teens, he’s written and recorded two EPs, the last of which, Standing Still, was released in 2023. Produced by Andy Park (Ciara, Noah Gunderson, Macklemore, Death Cab for Cutie), their partnership generated an impeccably mixed, inspiringly written, and well-performed record.
Standing Still acts as a fast-paced yet tender reflection on experiences many would consider universal: heartbreak, healing, difficult relationships, fear of the future, and simply living life. Underlying all of these themes is an urge to connect without the distractions of an increasingly digital world.
The second track, “Our Game,” utilizes soft, buttery guitar over a driving bass and drum line to highlight the contradictions present within the lyrics. The track tells the story of a relationship between two people who “fight fire with fire.” Despite the love they have for one another, reflected in the guitar and synthesizer elements, the arguments they have still underscore the entire relationship, as represented by the drums and bass. The track evolves from fighting each other to fighting for each other, even when it’s painful.
The title track, “Standing Still,” displays Senger’s guitar skills and smooth vocals coupled with tasteful synths and drums to create a solid, rock-infused pop track. The lyrics urge the listener to live in the moment and chase after what they want without standing still: “Baby you / Gotta live your life / Don’t be scared if it feels so right.”
Keep an eye out for potential upcoming releases and shows from Senger in the future.
