Gathering the tools to execute your craft is certainly a crucial step in the process, but using the craft as the tool is where the true performance lies.
A rising pop artist with an ear for her surrounding climate, Cashavelly combines questions of patriarchy, womanhood, status quo, and introspection with fiercely candored vocals to challenge her listeners to go beyond just what they hear.
Calling out the societally-ingrained trauma-induced patterns of chasing love from someone not fit to reciprocate, “Rewrite” discusses the hidden self-abandonment that can haunt relationships, where the idea of “fixing” a partner erases the acknowledgement of the other’s own needs and boundaries. “Caught it as a kid like a disease / Wrote it like a script in my diary,” Cashavelly sings, hinting at the deeply ingrained, sometimes faulted, approaches to love we learn in youth and recreate in adulthood.
Greeting the world today, August 9th, 2024, “Rewrite” simultaneously marks the first single of Cashavelly’s upcoming album, Meditation Through Gunfire, releasing October 18th, 2024. Following the single’s lead, the album pays homage to all of the “gunfire” women, as well as Cashavelly herself, have faced in the current political and societal climate and the meditative inner workings that provoke unwavering strength through external strain.
Actively practicing what she preaches, Cashavelly is the founder of The Cashavelly Collective (The CC), providing space and resources for women to disconnect from patriarchal conditioning and reconnect with themselves, each other, and find communal healing in the process. The Songbird Supper Club, a performance program through The CC, brings women creatives together to share their expressions with empowerment and without limitations.
A sweet 16 collection of songs, Cashavelly’s Meditation Through Gunfire challenges listeners of any identity to create their reckoning through realizing their pain, inner complexities, their origins, and their potentials for positive growth as an individual and a collective.
