In Nashville, bars are often the topic of conversation.
Between the world famous Broadway strip and the surrounding establishments, the drinks are endless and the live music (seemingly) never stops. It can be the perfect setting for a story of unexpectedly finding that perfect someone, but at the unfortunate expense of an existing relationship. Enter genre-bending New Jersey artist Karly C and her new single, “I Was Gonna Love You.”
In this new crossover single, Karly C spills the honest truth in the simple feeling of falling for a stranger, only to quickly learn of his current status of “taken”. The first verse sets the scene as she’s on stage playing her guitar, soon noticing “him” staring at her, while with another woman at the bar.
As she immediately becomes mesmerized by the attention, her admirer makes a bold move, and asks if she would sing while he plays her guitar in front of his girlfriend. The simultaneous feelings of guilt and infatuation immediately kick in, as do the first two lines of the chorus where Karly professes: “I swear I’m not usually like this, / But you two just don’t seem to quite fit”.
This build up cleverly introduces the hook and title, “That’s when I knew that I was gonna love you,” which is delivered with compelling vulnerability and a radiant vocal delivery.
The song was written by Karly C and Haley Ganis, and was produced by Dylan Maloney (guitarist for Colt Ford). Behind the console mixing and mastering was Billy Decker, and the track features Tim Galloway on dobro and Tania Hancheroff singing background vocals.
As a triple threat in writing, performing and producing, Karly C knows how to craft a catchy earworm of a song. While the feel of “I Was Gonna Love You” is more on the side of pop, the lyrics lean a bit more country. The pop aspect makes the song infectious and magnetic, even replicating the club or bar environment where Karly C meets her love interest for the story.
With her make-no-apologies, consequences-be-damned approach to her music compounded with her strong vocals, Karly C is one to keep an eye on. Her 2021 single, “Another Drink or Three,” spent 23 weeks on the Music Row charts, earning a respectable position of 101 out of 240 artists.
This time around, “I Was Gonna Love You” will be released to both country and Hot AC formats due to its contemporary middle of the road appeal. At this juncture in her career, it’s the perfect timing to release a single that crosses genres given Karly’s previous success on both pop and country radio.
