With a sound that’s far from mediocre, Mo Klé is still riding the high from his latest single, “King of Mediocrity,” which hit streaming on January 30th.
The indie singer-songwriter — whose real name is René Grünenfelder — rolled into the new year with this light-hearted melodic number, paired with resonating, melancholy lyrics.
The single revolves around the feeling of not being good enough, viewing oneself as always seeming to land somewhere smack dab in the middle. It’s a tug-of-war between mediocre and perfection, unable to realize that there are middle grounds of the two. For example, something like love can’t be true if it’s cloaked in perfection.
The single has many reflections of Klé’s personal experiences and thoughts, whether it was based solely on his music career or through his life. The music video continues this laidback atmosphere, showcasing both beautiful backgrounds and Klé simply enjoying the space he’s occupying. The video incorporates wholesome moments of him with his guitar, a percussion shaker, and him dancing around.
Klé has released a smattering of singles over the last eight years, as well as the album, Parallel World, back in October 2021. Something that is greatly appreciated is the accessibility of his mellow vibe and thought-out lyrics. Regardless of the platform, the meaning of each track sparks discussion. Another admirable quality within his music is his ability to weave songs in English, German, or Swiss German as well.
Through interviews and posts, Klé has talked about his love affair with music making. Fully getting invested around the age of thirteen, he played in punk rock and grunge bands with friends. Over time, growth towards his own personal sound emerged, and he in essence, hit the ground running.
Its nostalgic instrumentals with relatable lyrics allows “King of Mediocrity” to have truth in its needed message. It is the lead single from Klé’s upcoming album.
