NYC Vintage Psych Rockers Daisy Glaze Release Brooding New Single ‘Call Me Midnight’

Locked and loaded with vintage charm, the exciting if not mysterious psych rock duo that is Daisy Glaze released their gripping second single, “Call Me Midnight,” on January 13th.

Led by Louis Epstein (Hits, Jump Into The Gospel) and Alix Brown (Angry Angles w/ Jay Reatard, Golden Triangle), the two started writing songs together in 2016. They played live with a 5-piece band sharing the stage and headlining shows at various venues in NYC with The Black Lips, The Coathangers, Curtis Harding, and others.

Known for their sweeping cinematic sound that incorporates elements of Ennio Morricone, Jack Nitzche and the much-loved ragged pop of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood, they would not be out of place on a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack. In 2019, Daisy Glaze flew to Portugal to record their debut LP with acclaimed producer Sonic Boom (MGMT, Beach House, Panda Bear).

With two powerful singles now out in the world and a full-length record set to be released on BandCamp in late February, Daisy Glaze’s unique and retro sound is here with brute force.

“Call Me Midnight” seamlessly blends the psychedelic rock of the 60s and 70s with a dark, modern dream pop feel. The thunderous reverberated electric guitar guides the ominous track along with dark and dueling vocals of Epstein and Brown.

The vocals are two uniquely juxtaposed sounds that compliment each other and the instrumentals extremely well. The deep baritone voice of Epstein that starts the song has a grovel to it that blends pristine with the guitar. Brown’s voice that takes the second verse sits above the instrumentals, and has an airiness that offsets the deeper, heavier aspects of the music.

The music video, directed by Alexandra Cabral, fully encapsulates the psychedelic and artsy influences in the song. Shot on grainy film, with lots of black red and gray colors, it elicits feelings of nostalgia and intensity. Backlit shots with smoke and color blocked silhouettes over other shots add to the atmosphere and psychedelia of the video.

“Call Me Midnight” and “Strangers in the Dark”, the other single released from the group in December 2021, can both be found on YouTube with their respective music videos as well as all streaming platforms.
